"What a wonderful collection of pieces David has assembled here.Having tab and chord changes makes the music easily translatable to folk musicians. Thank you David!"
    Mike Marshall, mandolin maestro

"This is a really beautifully published work, and though I can't say I've played through them all, a really great collection of music for those I have. If you're planning on supporting working musicians, I can't see how you can do any better than buying a copy of this for yourself; we can all use something else to think about these days."
    Scott Tichenor, Mandolin Cafe

French and Italian Tunes is a collection of music from a variety of sources: medieval and Renaissance dances; bourrees, branles, marches, rigodons, and schottisches from France; jigs, an dros, hanter dros, and larides from Brittany; tarantellas, monferrines, marches, and polkas from Italy; mazurkas, waltzes, and valse musettes from Italy and France; airs, folksongs, and a carol from France and Italy.
All music is arranged and transcribed in standard notation and mandolin tablature, with chord symbols indicated. The level of the material ranges from simple folk tunes to complex and intricate Italian classics and French valse-musettes, and will provide an enjoyable assortment of tunes, a number of which may be somewhat unfamiliar to many players.

about

La Trotteuse is a valse musette writtten by Antoine Bouscatel, the “King of the Cabrettaires”(1867-1945). Bousca played the traditional music from the Auvergne on the cabrette (a French bagpipe). Like many Auvergnats, he moved to Paris in 1890, and opened a popular bar, Bal Bousca, featuring music and dancing. Bousca performed regularly with his friend the hurdy-gurdy player Baptiste, but their old-fashioned sound was to be transformed with the arrival of the accordion. The story goes that one night in 1906, an Italian accordionist named Charles Peguri asked to sit in at the dance. Bousca was skeptical, but it soon became apparent that the accordion, with its rich, full, and potentially chromatic sound, was a hit. Ruefully he told Baptiste “The days of my bagpipes are numbered, and your hurdy-gurdy too. This fellow with his instrument brings to us our ruin!...It is a revolution which is coming, do you hear? It is a full orchestra, this instrument of the devil! It takes the breath out of you, this biniou of satan!”
To complete the story, Peguri married Bouscatel's daughter, and the Italian-influenced musette accordian style became an essential part of French musical culture. La Trotteuse was inspired by the ladies in the neighborhood of Bal Bousca as they would promenade up and down the sidewalks (les trottoirs).
